My mom left a note: “We took the savings for a cruise. You deal with Victor.” I found my stepdad helpless on the bathroom floor. As I called for help, he pressed his ring into my hand and whispered, “$3.2 million, Jenna… it’s time.”

I picked it up.

Something immediately seemed wrong.

The tablets inside didn’t look like the ones I remembered seeing at the pharmacy.

They were uneven.

Too soft.

Almost like candy.

Victor reached for my wrist.

“Jenna. Don’t.”

I looked more closely.

They weren’t what he had been prescribed.

My stomach tightened.

“Mom knew about this?”

Victor looked away.

That was answer enough.

I reached for my phone.

No signal.

I tried the landline.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the router had been unplugged.

Victor’s phone was on the counter, but the SIM card had been removed.

His walker wasn’t nearby either.

I eventually found it near the basement stairs.

At that point, I stopped telling myself there had simply been some misunderstanding.
