I noticed that before he did.
I also knew about the women.
At first, I found messages.
Then hotel receipts.
Then a second phone Richard insisted belonged to an employee.
When I finally confronted him, I expected denial.
Maybe anger.
Maybe an apology.
Instead, he sat at the kitchen island and checked his watch.
“I’m not attracted to you anymore, Megan.”
I stared at him.
He continued almost casually.
“But divorce would be terrible for my reputation.”
I said nothing.
“People trust a family man.”
That sentence explained more about my marriage than anything he had said in fifteen years.
It was never only about being a husband.
Or a father.
Richard cared about being seen as one.
After that, I quietly started planning.
I updated my résumé at night after the children went to sleep.
I researched the certifications I would need to return to my field.
I copied financial documents.
Opened a private folder.
Started building a future Richard knew nothing about.
He never noticed.
He was too busy being admired.
Then the school announced its annual Parent of the Year award.
Richard’s behavior changed almost immediately.
One evening, he wandered into the laundry room while I folded towels.
“Do teachers ever ask the kids questions about parents?”
I looked up.
“Probably. Why?”
He shrugged.
“Just wondering.”
A few days later, he started coming home for dinner more often.
Not helping.
Just appearing.
He would sit beside Lily and ask about school while looking at his phone.
He reminded Sam about the expensive lake trip we had taken the previous summer.
“Great weekend, right?”
Sam usually nodded, confused.
Richard suddenly became interested in memories he had barely participated in.
Then an envelope arrived from the school.
It had a gold border.
Richard opened it before I came home.
When I asked what it was, he turned it face down beneath his keys.
“Nothing important.”
He changed the subject immediately.
The ceremony was Friday night.
On Thursday, Richard told me everyone needed to attend.
“The principal invited us.”
“Why?”
He smiled.
“You’ll see.”
Lily started bouncing in her chair.
“Daddy said there’s a surprise.”
Richard shot her a look.
