My husband went on vacation with his mother and sister and left me with the kids to harvest sweet corn on my parents’ property. Before leaving, he laughed and said, “A little work might be good for you too.” I didn’t argue. I simply froze my cards. The next day, he called me in a pan!c because they couldn’t cover the $4,200 hotel bill… but he still had no idea what I had uncovered.

And, occasionally, her computer.

One final email appeared.

It contained only five words.

Ask Vanessa who Rachel Carter is.

Rachel slowly turned toward the closed bedroom door.

Downstairs, her children were laughing with their grandparents.

Outside, the evening shadows had begun stretching across the cornfields.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Rachel answered but said nothing.

A woman whispered:

“Rachel?”

She recognized the voice instantly.

Vanessa.

“Where are you?”

Vanessa sounded like she was crying.

“You need to listen very carefully.”

“Were you involved with Brandon?”

“No.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not.”

“I saw the photograph.”

Vanessa drew in an unsteady breath.

“That photograph is exactly why I called.”

“What does that mean?”

“Brandon wasn’t the person who brought me into this.”

Rachel tightened her fingers around the phone.

“Then who was?”

Vanessa’s next words made Rachel lower herself into the chair.

“You were.”

Rachel remained silent.

Vanessa continued before she had a chance to respond.

“At least… someone claiming to be you was.”

“That doesn’t make any sense.”

“I know.”

“Then explain it.”

“I can’t do that over the phone.”

“Everyone keeps telling me that.”

“Because every phone connected to this situation may be compromised.”

A chill moved across Rachel’s skin.

“Vanessa—”

“There’s something hidden in your office.”

“What?”

“The locked drawer beneath your filing cabinet.”

Rachel frowned.

“I don’t have a locked drawer.”

“Yes, you do.”

“No.”

“You’ve simply never opened it.”

Rachel stood up.

“What’s inside?”

Vanessa’s voice became even more emotional.

“Evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

“That Brandon wasn’t the person who began all of this.”

Rachel stared through the darkening window.

“Then who was?”

There was a long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Your father.”

The call ended.

Rachel didn’t move.

Downstairs, her father laughed at something Lucas had said.

A completely ordinary laugh.

Warm.

Familiar.

The same laugh Rachel had known for her entire life.

She stepped into the hallway.

Her father was standing at the bottom of the staircase.

He looked up.

For a moment, neither of them said anything.

Then Rachel noticed something in his right hand.

A phone.

Not the phone he normally used.

A small black prepaid phone.

Her father glanced down at it.

Then back at her.

And from the expression on his face, Rachel understood that he knew exactly what she had just learned.

He slipped the phone into his pocket.

“Rachel,” he said quietly.

Behind him, Lucas and Chloe were still laughing in the kitchen.

Rachel stepped down one stair.

“What have you been hiding?”

Her father’s expression shifted.

Not guilt.

Not surprise.

Something even more unsettling.

Relief.

As though he had spent years waiting for her to finally ask.

“Your husband,” he said, “was never supposed to discover it.”

Rachel froze.

“Discover what?”

Her father glanced toward the kitchen before lowering his voice.

“That the thirty-eight thousand dollars wasn’t the first money he took.”

Rachel tightened her grip on the banister.

“He was trying to put it back.”

A cold pressure settled beneath her ribs.

“Put what back?”

Her father looked directly into her eyes.

“The money your mother and I hid before you ever married him.”

Rachel could barely manage the next word.

“What?”

Then headlights swept across the farmhouse windows.

A vehicle had turned onto the long dirt driveway.

Her father looked outside.

The color disappeared from his face.

Rachel followed his gaze.

A black SUV was slowly approaching the house.

Her father whispered:

“They found us.”

And that was when Rachel realized the vacation, the questionable loan documents, the missing college money, and even Brandon’s betrayal might all be pieces of a secret that had started long before she ever knew him.
