My father's study.
The mahogany desk.
The blue folder sitting between us.
And my mother's phone.
Recording.
It had started with a question.
My grandparents had created a family trust years ago. According to the documents I'd recently discovered, I was supposed to receive a substantial portion of it.
But when I reviewed the financial records, something didn't make sense.
Millions of dollars had been moved.
Some transfers had gone to companies I'd never heard of.
Others had been authorized using signatures that didn't look right.
So I confronted my father.
He exploded.
My mother locked the study door.
And then my father attacked me.
I remember falling.
I remember trying to protect my head.
And I remember my mother laughing while filming.
“Look at you,” she said. “You're pathetic.”
Then everything disappeared.
Now, lying behind that supermarket, I finally understood what they'd done.
They hadn't simply thrown me out.
They had taken my phone, wallet, identification, and shoes.
They had driven me miles away from home.
They had left me there hoping nobody would find me.
A vehicle suddenly entered the alley.
I panicked.
But an older man stepped out and immediately raised his hands.
“Miss, don't move. I'm calling an ambulance.”
His name was Ernesto Alvarez.
MY FATHER BEAT ME UNTIL I BLACKED OUT… THEN MY MOTHER LEFT ME ON THE STREET AND LAUGHED. THEY NEVER KNEW WHAT WAS INSIDE MY BLUE FOLDER.
