“My partner left me,” she revealed quietly after a long pause. He had discovered that she had spent years pretending to pay her mortgage independently when a significant chunk was coming directly from my bank account. “He said I was dishonest with him.”
“Liars usually get caught,” I observed.
“You were the one who forwarded him those transaction records,” she accused me angrily. “You are being downright cruel.”
I glanced over at the small bed where my daughter was napping peacefully. “Last Sunday at Mom’s place, when she dumped Gemma’s food down the drain, you made a point to say that I was living like royalty,” I reminded her.
My sister tightened her lips. “Mom was the one who threw the soup,” she murmured defensive.
“And you sat right beside her and laughed,” I replied.
“I didn’t physically touch the bowl,” she insisted.
“No, you simply sat back and enjoyed watching her do it,” I said flatly.
She stood silent for a moment before deploying a phrase that had worked on me for years: “But we are sisters, Paige.”
“Precisely,” I answered.
I refused to resume the monthly transfers, not for that month or any month following. My sister was forced to sell her luxury car, negotiate terms with her bank, and start paying her bills using income derived strictly from her own labor.
Meanwhile, Brenda initiated a social campaign against me, contacting distant relatives to claim I was plotting to make her homeless. She showed neighbors pictures of me entering the building to frame me as a harasser.
When two aunts and a cousin called to lecture me, I provided the exact same answer to each of them: “The property has been registered in my name for five full years, the matter is currently before the court, and I will not discuss it over the phone.” They quickly stopped calling.
My father did not return to live at the apartment either. After executing his statement at the notary office, he moved into his brother’s residence temporarily, sending me a short message that read: “Your mother needs to face reality. I will not give false testimony in court.”
Brenda branded him a traitor, called me a monster, and berated my sister for her helplessness. Deprived of people to dominate, she was left isolated with her own frustration.
