Eric is... around the edges. He has supervised visitation he rarely uses. He never rebuilt the life his mother's money gave him; it turns out he didn't know how, having never actually built anything himself. Last I heard he was renting a small place and working a job he considers beneath him, which is to say, a normal job, which is to say, the life he was always going to have without Barbara underwriting his self-image.
He and Barbara are estranged, mostly. She tried, for a while — she's his mother, and mothers hope. But Eric couldn't forgive her for choosing Chloe, and Barbara couldn't respect a man who'd need to be forgiven for that.
"He thinks I betrayed him," she told me once. "By taking care of his daughter. That's the whole tragedy of my son, right there. He genuinely believes I wronged him by loving the child he abandoned more than I loved his comfort.
