Tom blinked.
Daniel did too.
Emma turned toward Michael.
Her husband.
“Dance with me.”
Michael didn’t hesitate.
He walked onto the floor.
Held out his hand.
Emma took it.
The music began.
And my daughter danced.
Nobody cheered.
I’m glad they didn’t.
This wasn’t a victory over Tom.
It wasn’t a rejection of Daniel.
It wasn’t revenge.
For once, Emma had been asked what she wanted and had answered without calculating which choice would hurt everyone the least.
I looked at Tom.
He was still there.
Kristen was too.
Daniel hadn’t left either.
That mattered.
But for the first time, it wasn’t Emma’s responsibility to make sure they stayed.
Much later, after dessert plates had been cleared and the dance floor was crowded, I saw Emma walk toward Daniel.
No announcement.
No microphone.
No audience.
She held out her hand.
Daniel looked at her.
“You sure?”
Emma smiled.
“I’m sure.”
He took her hand.
And they danced.
Because she wanted to.
For once, I didn’t go over.
I didn’t study her expression.
I didn’t ask whether she was okay.
That was part of what I had learned too.
Sophie came and stood beside me.
Neither of us spoke for a while.
Then she said,
“I really messed up tonight, didn’t I?”
“You were trying to protect her.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
I looked at her.
She had tears in her eyes.
