PART 25
Tyler’s counseling, I learned later from the case summary, included a session on what a kick does to a smaller body. Not a scare film. A simple diagram. Ribs. Lungs. The way pain steals air.
I was glad I was not in that room.
I was glad someone was.
My sister posted nothing online for six weeks, which for her was a kind of wilderness. Then she posted a sunset and a caption about growth. I did not comment. Growth that cannot name the harm is just landscaping.
Dad forwarded me nothing. He showed up at my son’s spring concert and sat in the back. When my son spotted him he gave a small wave from the risers. Afterward Dad told him the second song was his favorite and did not mention Tyler, Mom, or the word family.
That was the correct playlist.
Mom sent a long email in April. She listed everything she had done for me since I was born. Laundry. Rides. A winter coat in 1998. The implication was a ledger. My silence was presented as unpaid debt.
I answered in seven lines.
Thank you for the coat. Saturday was still Saturday. My son still remembers who moved toward him and who moved toward the story. I will not bring him to a house that taught him his emergency was a public relations problem. I hope you become someone he can trust. That work is yours.
She did not reply.
Ledgers are quieter when they do not win.
