PART 15
A month out, the follow-up X-ray showed good progress. The doctor said he could return to recess with care. No contact sports for a while.
I told my son.
He said, “I didn’t like football anyway.”
Then he said, “Tyler liked that I didn’t like football. He said that was why I was easy.”
I sat down at the table with him.
“Easy is not the word. Smaller is the word. He used that. That says something about him, not about you.”
“Coach told him to be a hammer.”
I did not know if that was a real coach sentence or a sentence that had passed through my sister’s mouth and come out wearing a whistle. Either way, I answered the child in front of me.
“You are not a nail.”
He smiled a little, which still made him wince, and then he asked if we could walk to the park if we went slow.
We did.
He did not run.
He watched other kids run and did not look ashamed.
That was a kind of healing no film could show.
