My daughter sent me a message saying, “We’ve decided to distance ourselves from you. Please don’t contact us anymore.”

Meanwhile, Sarah drove a new SUV.

David had turned their garage into a home gym.

They remodeled their kitchen two summers earlier.

Sarah said they financed most of it “responsibly.”

I never asked why responsible financing still required me to cover part of their mortgage every month.

At 8:15, my phone buzzed.

Sarah.

Mom, what do you mean you canceled it?

I took a sip of coffee.

Another message followed.

The mortgage drafts on the first. Today is the 28th. You can’t suddenly stop it.

Then:

David is really stressed. His business is finally starting to turn a corner. We need that transfer. Please don’t overreact because of one emotional conversation.

Overreact.

I stared at the word.

The previous night, they told me never to look for them again.

By breakfast, respecting that request had become an overreaction.

I didn’t reply.

Two minutes later:

Mom?

Then:

Please answer me.

Then David:

Amber, call us. This needs to be discussed like adults.

I nearly laughed.

Instead, I turned the phone facedown.

The doorbell rang at 9:22.

I knew before checking.
