I stopped at the entrance.
“What is this?”
Ethan stepped forward.
“I wanted to apologize.”
“You already did.”
“Not properly.”
Claire looked at me.
“I owe you one too.”
I said nothing.
She took a breath.
“What I did was cruel.”
“Yes.”
Her eyes dropped.
“I thought you didn’t belong in the life Ethan and I were building.”
“You made that clear.”
“I was wrong.”
I waited.
She continued.
“I was so focused on appearances that I forgot what family was supposed to mean.”
I didn’t answer immediately.
Then I said:
“An apology is the beginning. Not the ending.”
She nodded.
“I understand.”
Ethan stepped beside her.
“We’re going to do better.”
I looked at both of them.
“I hope you do.”
Daniel cleared his throat.
Then he walked toward me holding a folder.
“I believe this belongs to you.”
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
My original investment papers.
And a check.
I stared at him.
“What is this?”
“Your share.”
I shook my head.
“I never asked for it.”
“I know.”
He smiled.
“But after all these years, I think it’s time you received what you earned.”
I looked at Ethan.
He smiled.
“Take it, Mom.”
I closed the folder.
“I’ll think about it.”
Daniel laughed.
“That sounds like the Eleanor Hayes I remember.”
Everyone laughed softly.
For the first time in a long time, I felt no need to prove anything.
Months passed.
Things changed slowly.
Claire stopped talking about influential people.
She started talking about family.
