MY 11-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER CAME HOME SOAKING WET—BUT HER KEY WOULDN’T WORK. THEN MY OWN MOTHER TOLD HER, “YOU DON’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE.”

“What instructions?”
She smiled faintly.
“You'll find out soon enough.”
Then she closed the door.
Three days later…
a letter arrived at my hospital.
And the name written on the envelope was my father's.

THE LETTER FROM MY DEAD FATHER
Three days after my mother locked us out, I received an envelope at the hospital.
It had my father's handwriting on it.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a single sentence:
“Rachel, if Margaret ever tells you that you and Lily no longer belong in my house, do not leave without reading the documents I left with my attorney.”
I read it twice.
Then a second page fell out.
It contained an attorney's name and a date.
My father's final instructions had been prepared months before he died.
But why?
And what exactly had my father left for me and Lily?
I called the attorney immediately.
His first words were:
“Rachel, I've been waiting for you.”
Then he told me something that made me completely speechless.
