“I have indeed been looking for a place of my own, Pamela,” I answered steadily.
“It is a four-bedroom home on Elm Street purchased entirely with cash through an entity named Foster Heritage LLC,” Pamela said, her voice rising in frustration. “Where on earth did you get that kind of money, Henrietta? Brandon and I reviewed your financial situation after Walter died, and you only had enough money to support yourself modestly, not enough to buy real estate in this area.”
“My financial circumstances have changed,” I stated simply.
“Did you inherit a secret bank account that you hid from your own son?” Pamela asked, her eyes narrowing as she calculated possibilities.
I took off my reading glasses and set them down on the desk.
“Pamela, why do you believe you are entitled to an accounting of my private finances?” I asked directly.
The atmosphere in the room instantly chilled, and Pamela went quiet for several seconds as she recalculated her approach.
“Brandon and I have taken care of you for two whole years, Henrietta,” Pamela said defensively. “We opened our home to you when you had nowhere else to go, so I believe we deserve complete transparency from you.”
Hearing her frame my two years of cooking, cleaning, and emotional isolation as an act of selfless charity cut deep, but I kept my composure.
“You have provided me with shelter, and I have always been grateful for that,” I replied smoothly. “However, I will be moving out into my new home within the month.”
“If you have suddenly come into a massive fortune, Brandon is your only son and your legal heir,” Pamela insisted with a harsh edge to her tone. “He has a fundamental right to know about these assets because there are major tax consequences and estate planning matters to consider.”
“I have already retained an exceptional attorney and a highly qualified financial manager to handle all of those matters properly,” I informed her coolly.
“Henrietta, if you are hiding vast assets and something suddenly happens to you at your advanced age, it will create catastrophic legal complications for Brandon and this family,” Pamela snapped angrily.
“I have carefully considered every single detail, Pamela, so thank you for your concern,” I said before turning back to my desk.
She slammed the door shut as she exited, leaving me sitting at my desk with my hands trembling from the intense adrenaline of the confrontation. Later that evening, Brandon came up to my room and sat awkwardly on the edge of the narrow guest bed, staring down at his hands with a troubled expression.
“Pamela is extremely upset, Mom,” Brandon began softly. “She told me you were completely evasive about where you got the funds for a new house, and it is making both of us deeply worried about you.”
