I was meticulous about maintaining my everyday routine at Brandon’s house so as not to arouse suspicion, eating the same light breakfast, completing the same household chores, and enduring the same quiet evenings. However, subtle shifts always occur when a person stops acting like a victim, and Pamela was the very first person to sense that something fundamental had changed.
She had a keen eye for subtle details that could affect her interests, which was precisely what made her a successful real estate agent and an observant daughter-in-law. One Thursday evening, I overheard her speaking to Brandon in the living room while I was walking down the hallway.
“Your mother has been going out alone far more often lately, Brandon,” Pamela noted in a low, suspicious tone. “I saw a thick professional folder sitting on the kitchen table earlier today before she quickly swept it up and took it to her bedroom, and it looked like serious legal documentation.”
“She probably just has administrative matters to resolve regarding Dad’s old estate,” Brandon replied with a tired sigh.
“Brandon, Walter’s estate was fully settled over two years ago,” Pamela pointed out dryly.
“I will ask her about it tomorrow,” Brandon promised.
He confronted me the following morning over breakfast, attempting to sound entirely casual as he leaned against the kitchen counter.
“Mom, is everything going all right with you?” Brandon asked, trying to sound caring. “Pamela mentioned that you have had several private appointments around town recently, and I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything medical.”
I looked at my son over the rim of my warm mug, seeing the genuine concern in his eyes alongside a subtle layer of watchfulness that made me feel uneasy.
“I am doing just fine, Brandon,” I replied smoothly. “I am simply taking care of a few administrative tasks to ensure my affairs are in proper order, as paperwork seems to accumulate endlessly at my age.”
He accepted my explanation with a simple nod and dropped the subject, but I noticed later that evening that Pamela had left her personal laptop open on the kitchen counter in a calculated manner. Furthermore, when I returned to my bedroom, I discovered that the small lockbox I kept inside my closet had been subtly shifted from its original position, indicating that someone had attempted to open it while I was out.
