Tiny.
Warm.
Beautiful.
Ours.
When visitors were finally allowed inside, Ethan was the first person through the door.
He carried a bouquet in one hand and wore the biggest smile I had seen in months.
The moment he saw me, his eyes became wet.
“This is the happiest day of my life.”
He kissed my forehead.
Then his attention shifted toward the bassinet.
“Can I see her?”
I smiled.
“Of course.”
Ethan slowly approached Lily.
He leaned over.
For a moment, his expression was filled with pure happiness.
Then he froze.
The smile disappeared.
His shoulders stiffened.
And the flowers fell from his hand.
“Ethan?”
Nothing.
He continued staring at Lily.
I pushed myself slightly higher against the pillows.
“What’s wrong?”
Still no answer.
Finally, he turned toward me.
I was still recovering from a long, exhausting delivery when my husband finally walked into the hospital room and leaned over our newborn daughter.
