The entire courtroom fell silent.
THE RECORDING NOBODY WAS SUPPOSED TO HEAR
Judge Carter ordered the recorder secured and asked the attorneys to explain how it had been obtained.
Sophie insisted her mother had found it in a box of items left behind at the hospital where she worked.
Then she revealed the part that made Arthur grip the arms of his wheelchair.
“I heard that man say Mr. Whitmore was going to forget everything soon,” Sophie whispered, pointing toward Mark Ellis. “He said they needed to finish before anyone noticed.”
Mark abruptly stood.
“This is being taken completely out of context!”
The judge ordered him to sit down.
The recorder was not played immediately. The court first needed to determine what it contained, whether it was authentic, and whether it could lawfully be considered.
