Elena touched the plastic stick inside her purse and made a silent choice not to reveal it. She wanted to know whether he would choose her without knowing there was a baby.
He didn’t.
Four days later, Alex filed for divorce.
Now, alone in his penthouse, he watched four healthy five-year-olds laughing beside the woman he had abandoned because he feared never having children.
He searched for the corporate headquarters of Little Nests and drove directly to her Back Bay office. Elena refused to let him come upstairs. So he remained outside on the sidewalk for three hours.
When she eventually emerged through the glass doors, she wasn’t surprised to find him waiting.
“I saw you on television,” he choked out. “Elena, I need to know.”
“You left because you wanted kids,” she said calmly, pulling her coat tighter against the Boston cold. “Now you see four, and you think you’re owed answers.”
