Daniel shrugged.
“He’s our doctor.”
Ethan, standing in the doorway, nearly smiled.
Then Daniel added:
“And probably my dad.”
Hannah’s breath caught.
The DNA result had arrived that morning.
99.9998 percent probability of paternity.
There was no longer any doubt.
Ethan was Daniel’s father.
Yet something stranger happened two days later.
A hospital geneticist requested to speak privately with Ethan.
“There’s an anomaly in the twins’ neonatal screening.”
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
“Disease?”
“No.”
The geneticist slid a file toward him.
“We ran expanded testing because of Noah’s respiratory complications.”
“And?”
The woman frowned.
“There’s a genetic relationship that doesn’t make sense.”
Ethan stared at the report.
Then looked up.
“What are you saying?”
She pointed to the markers.
“Hannah is unquestionably their mother.”
“Yes.”
“But Marcus Vale could not have been the biological father.”
Ethan felt the room contract.
“Then who was?”
The geneticist turned the page.
