“A disaster?”
“That woman would have attached herself to you forever.”
“Hannah.”
“Excuse me?”
“Her name is Hannah.”
Evelyn’s mouth tightened.
“She had no family, no connections, no education worth mentioning, and no understanding of our world.”
“She had me.”
“She would have ruined you.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You told her Daniel died.”
“I was told she would recover.”
“Recover?”
His voice exploded through the library.
“YOU LET A MOTHER GRIEVE A LIVING CHILD.”
Evelyn flinched.
For the first time, Ethan saw uncertainty.
“Where is he?”
She looked away.
“The placement was confidential.”
“You know exactly where he went.”
“I knew.”
That word stopped him.
“Knew?”
Evelyn’s face changed.
“Three years ago, his adoptive parents died in a car accident.”
Ethan went still.
“What happened to him?”
“The boy entered temporary guardianship.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I stopped following the case.”
