She gestured weakly between them.
“—it died a long time ago.”
Ethan stared at her.
“Did it?”
Hannah’s eyes betrayed her.
Only for an instant.
But he saw it.
That was enough.
Before he could speak, the door opened.
A nurse stepped inside.
“Dr. Caldwell? Sorry to interrupt. Baby B is having another desaturation episode.”
Hannah went pale.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan turned professional immediately.
“Her oxygen level is dropping.”
“Is she dying?”
“No one said that.”
“I want to see her.”
“You can’t yet.”
“I need to see her.”
“Hannah—”
“She needs me!”
She tried to get out of bed.
Pain folded her in half.
Ethan caught her before she fell.
For one suspended second, Hannah was in his arms again.
His hand held her back.
Her face pressed against his chest.
The scent of him—
Soap.
Coffee.
Something faintly cedar.
Memory struck so violently that she forgot where she was.
