“The twins are stable for now.”
“For now?”
“They’re premature.”
Hannah finally looked at him.
“Are they going to survive?”
“I won’t lie to you.”
“You used to.”
The words landed between them.
Ethan stopped.
Hannah’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained steady.
“You said you wouldn’t lie.”
He absorbed the blow.
Then answered carefully.
“They have a difficult road ahead. Your son is stronger at the moment. Your daughter needed resuscitation and respiratory support. But both are responding.”
Hannah nodded.
“Then that’s all I need to know.”
“No.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“No?”
“That isn’t all.”
“Leave.”
“I need to ask you questions.”
“You’re my surgeon, not my interrogator.”
“I’m also the man who watched you disappear five years ago.”
“You told me to disappear.”
“I told you—”
“I remember exactly what you told me.”
He stopped.
So did she.
