“What?”
“A statement announcing that the boys would be transferring to a private school near his new residence after the divorce.”
I closed my eyes.
“He told me he hadn't decided where we would live.”
“He has.”
“Where?”
“Richmond.”
I gripped the edge of the table.
It wasn't another country.
It wasn't a secret disappearance.
But it was far enough to disrupt the boys' school, friendships, and ordinary time with me.
Vanessa continued.
“He planned to move after the sale. He said he could establish a new household before you had the resources to challenge the arrangement.”
“Did he actually say that?”
“Yes.”
“Will you testify?”
Her voice broke.
“I don't know.”
“Then why send me the memorandum?”
“Because I saw the custody statement he wanted me to prepare.”
She paused.
“It said the children had no meaningful emotional attachment to you.”
I could barely speak.
“That's what you helped him write?”
“No. I refused that one.”
Vanessa began crying.
“I looked at the photographs from Noah's birthday party. Every picture had one of those boys holding your hand.”
I remembered that party.
Daniel had arrived late.
Vanessa had brought the cake.
Eli had spent half the afternoon refusing to leave my side because he was frightened of the inflatable slide.
Vanessa had watched me carry him across the lawn.
She knew.
Whatever Daniel told her, she knew.
“I'm not asking you to forgive me,” she whispered.
“Good.”
I looked toward the hallway where my sons were sleeping.
“Send the documents through the court-approved process. If you're going to tell the truth, tell all of it.”
She agreed.
Then I ended the call.
I sat in the kitchen for a long time.
I had imagined Vanessa as a woman who possessed everything Daniel once gave me.
His attention.
His affection.
His loyalty.
Now I understood that she had believed the same carefully manufactured version of him that I had believed for years.
That did not excuse what she had done.
But it explained why she had begun helping him before discovering that she, too, was being manipulated.
The forensic examination took another two months.
During that time, Daniel and I operated under temporary parenting arrangements.
