The records showed Susan received the money.
But there was no hospital payment.
No doctor.
No treatment.
Three days later, nearly the same amount was transferred from Susan to an account I had never seen before.
Claire stared at the screen.
“Whose account is that?”
“I don’t know.”
She typed for several minutes.
Then she stopped.
“Oh, no.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
Claire slowly turned the laptop toward me.
The account was connected to a company registered under Lucas’s name.
A company Brandon had never mentioned.
“What kind of company?”
“Real estate development.”
I laughed once.
It was a terrible sound.
“Lucas doesn’t work in real estate.”
“Apparently, he does now.”
My phone started ringing.
Brandon.
I stared at his name.
Claire shook her head.
“Don’t answer.”
It stopped.
Then started again.
Then a message appeared.
Where are you?
Another one followed.
Why did you freeze the card?
