“You walked into a hotel with another woman.”
“You asked if my baby was yours before you asked whether I was safe.”
“You believed photographs.”
“You believed a message.”
“You believed your uncle.”
“And when I vanished, you looked for me through people he controlled.”
Alejandro had no defense.
Lucía’s eyes filled.
“I spent months thinking the man I loved had decided I was disposable.”
“You spent months thinking I betrayed you.”
“Maybe Ramón built the lie.”
“But he built it out of things we were both willing to believe.”
She walked away.
Alejandro did not follow.
Elena Vargas arrived forty minutes later.
She was sixty-two.
Sharp-eyed.
Calm.
And unimpressed by powerful men in emotional crises.
She read the forged hotel authorization.
Then the alleged letter to Lucía.
Then the photographs Ramón had given Alejandro.
“We preserve everything first.”
she said.
“No confrontations.”
Alejandro nodded.
