A command disguised as a name.
The child flinched so violently it looked as though an invisible hand had physically struck her. She stumbled half a step backward, disappearing farther into the hallway shadows.
“Don’t speak to her like that,” I snapped as adrenaline surged through my body.
I forced myself past Thomas’s shoulder and into the foyer. Daniel immediately followed, becoming a solid wall of navy uniform behind me and preventing Thomas from shutting the door.
I no longer cared about mud from my boots or the supposed sanctity of his spotless floor.
I looked upward toward the little girl and immediately softened my expression, allowing my voice to become a gentle tether.
“Hi, Emily. I’m Officer Maria. That’s Officer Daniel. We came because we wanted to make sure you were safe. Are you okay, sweetheart?”
Emily remained silent.
Her entire body trembled uncontrollably.
Her wide eyes moved rapidly from me to the thick leather belt hanging from her father’s fist, then back to my face.
As she tightened her grip around the stuffed rabbit, one sleeve of her pink pajama top slipped downward.
My breath caught painfully inside my throat.
Bruises surrounded her thin wrist.
But these weren’t random, shapeless bruises caused by falling on a playground or bumping into furniture.
They were deep, furious purples mixed with sickening healing yellows, forming precise overlapping coils.
The marks spiraled tightly up her forearm in circular patterns.
They were the brutal, unmistakable signature of someone being tightly bound by leather or thick cables.
Daddy’s snake.
The innocent metaphor shattered completely inside my mind, revealing the horrifying reality beneath it.
The slow whistle.
The slithering noise on the staircase.
The thick belt wrapped around her father’s bloody knuckles.
Emily noticed me staring at her wrist.
Slowly, still trembling uncontrollably, she reached across with her other hand and began compulsively rubbing the coiled bruises.
“The snake,” she whispered, her voice rasping and broken, as if she had spent hours screaming into a pillow. “It bites so hard.”
Thomas spun around.
Every trace of suburban normality vanished from his face.
His expression twisted into pure, uncontrolled fury.
“I told you to go to sleep!” he roared, taking a heavy, aggressive step toward the staircase while raising his hand.
“Hey!” Daniel shouted, lunging forward and positioning himself firmly between Thomas and the stairs as his hand snapped toward his weapon. “You stay exactly where you are!”
Emily screamed and collapsed onto the steps, curling tightly into a fetal position while crushing the stuffed rabbit against her stomach.
