Every accusation was false.
I had criticized Ryan’s business once after reviewing his books.
His construction firm had expanded too fast, accepted low-margin projects, and borrowed heavily to cover payroll.
I told Ryan directly.
Then I helped him fix it.
Dad had transformed that into something ugly.
“Why would he do this?” I asked.
Natalie hesitated.
“There’s more.”
She opened an email between Dad and Ryan.
Dad had written:
***Once Ethan is out of the picture, we can discuss transitioning the development opportunities we talked about.***
I read it twice.
“What development opportunities?”
Natalie didn’t know.
But I had an idea.
For eighteen months, Mercer Development Holdings had been quietly negotiating to buy several industrial properties in Fairfield County for mixed-use redevelopment.
Dad had spent thirty years in commercial real estate.
He knew roughly what I was buying.
Six months earlier, he had asked me to bring Ryan into one of those deals.
I refused.
Ryan’s company was overleveraged and inexperienced at that scale.
Dad took it personally.
“You think this is about business?” Natalie asked.
“I think everything with my father eventually becomes about business.”
My phone rang.
Mom.
I declined.
Then Claire.
Declined.
Then Dad.
I let it go to voicemail.
Natalie leaned forward.
“There’s something else.”
Dad had told everyone that I had refused Claire’s invitation.
After the invitations went out, his story was that Claire had privately invited me and I rejected her because Ryan would be there.
“That doesn’t even make sense.”
“It didn’t have to,” Natalie said. “Nobody asked you.”
Nobody asked you.
Thirty relatives at the birthday dinner.
One hundred forty-six wedding guests.
Months of planning.
And nobody had called to ask why I wasn’t attending.
They had simply accepted the easiest story.
“What proof do you have that Claire knew?”
Natalie went still.
“That’s where it gets complicated.”
She showed me another screenshot.
Three weeks before the wedding, Claire had texted her:
***I feel horrible about Ethan.***
Natalie replied:
***Then invite him.***
Claire:
***Dad says if I reverse the decision now, everyone will think Ethan bullied me into it.***
Natalie:
***Did he?***
Claire:
***No.***
I stopped reading.
