I fastened the bracelet around my wrist and looked at my reflection in the vault glass.
The woman looking back at me was the exact same woman Daniel had left sleeping in bed at 2:37 that morning. There was only one difference: she no longer needed his permission to know who she was.
Daniel had walked out of our house believing that by sunrise, I would wake up without a husband, without money, and without a future. In a narrow sense, he was right, that morning, I lost a dishonest husband.

But I kept my company, my assets, my mother’s legacy, and something I had surrendered years ago: my own voice.
I smiled as I snapped the empty velvet case shut. Daniel had wanted me to wake up with nothing. Instead, that morning was the very first time in nine years that I actually woke up.
