“Are you really going to eat that?” my daughter-in-law sneered, eyeing my plate as everyone around us laughed awkwardly.

“We’re married. It’s our money.”

“No,” Daniel said.

His voice was quiet.

She turned.

“What?”

“That account pays employees.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Daniel, don’t embarrass me in front of everyone.”

He stood.

For years, I had waited for my son to defend himself against the small manipulations I kept pretending not to notice.

That night, something finally broke open.

“You told me food costs were destroying us,” he said. “I fired two people because you told me we couldn’t afford payroll.”

Her face tightened.

“That wasn’t my decision.”

“You spent twelve thousand dollars on clothes.”

“For promotion!”

“You don’t work at the restaurant.”

The room fell silent.

Vanessa pointed at me.

“She poisoned you against me.”

Finally, Daniel said the words I had needed to hear.

“No. Mom stayed quiet for me. You used that silence because you thought she was weak.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she turned vicious.

“Oh, please. She’s an overweight warehouse woman with money. That doesn’t make her impressive.”

Daniel’s expression changed completely.

“Get out.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“Get out of this house.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You’re choosing her?”

“I’m choosing basic decency.”

She started shouting.
