Then she spoke through the door. “Mom and Dad asked me to check on you. They said you haven’t answered their calls in years. They’re worried.”
I almost laughed.
“They blocked me seven years ago. What calls?”
Her entire expression shifted.
“What?”
I told her everything that had happened in March 2018. Dad had called saying she needed emergency surgery, I had wired fifteen thousand dollars, and three days later, every way of contacting them had disappeared.
Monica looked at me as if I had suddenly started speaking another language.
“Julia, I never had surgery.”
The room fell silent.
She explained that she had never been diagnosed with an ovarian tumor and had never needed the treatment my parents had described. In March 2018, she had actually been staying with our grandmother in Harrisburg after Grandma fell. My parents had used Monica’s name to invent a medical emergency that had never existed.
“They used your name to steal from me.”
Monica immediately asked to see the evidence. It wasn’t because she doubted me. She needed to understand exactly what they had done. I opened the folder labeled INSURANCE and showed her the wire receipt, the blocked messages, and the voicemail Dad had left.
His voice filled the apartment.
“Monica’s sick. This is serious. She’s your sister.”
Monica listened in complete silence.
“They used me.”
“Yes.”
“And I didn’t even know?”
“No.”
She left that evening and checked into a hotel because she needed time to process everything. A week later, she sent me copies of her 2018 medical records. They showed no surgery, no oncology consultation, no tumor, and no related insurance claim.
