After Burying My Husband, My Son Dumped Three Cages on Me—By Dawn, I Was Sailing Away for an Entire Year

Twenty-eight from Austin.

Eleven from Chloe.

Four from unknown numbers.

There was one voicemail from my attorney.

I listened.

“Mrs. Bennett, everything is handled. The trust is valid. The house is protected. Mr. Bennett and his wife have no ownership rights. They have until Friday to remove their belongings from the property if they have any.”

I smiled.

Then another message arrived.

This one was from Austin.

“Mom, Chloe wants to talk to you.”

I deleted it.

A minute later, another message.

“Please.”

I stared at that word for a long time.

Then I typed three words.

“You already did.”

I sent them.

And put the phone away.

Weeks passed.

The cruise took me from Miami to Jamaica, then across the Caribbean and eventually toward Europe.

I saw places I had spent forty years telling myself I would visit someday.

Someday had always meant after Austin needed something.

After Chloe needed babysitting.

After Ernest got better.

After the bills were paid.

After everyone else was comfortable.

There was always an after.

Until there wasn’t.

So I stopped waiting.

I learned how to dance on the upper deck.

I ate breakfast alone.

I joined a watercolor class.

I sat beside strangers and listened to their stories.

And nobody asked me what I could do for them.

They only asked my name.

“Theresa.”

That was enough.

Two months into the cruise, Austin called again.
